Introduction

Training is a nuclear aspect of universities, which has direct and indirect repercussions on society. Whether through degrees, master’s degrees or postgraduate qualifications or other kinds of specific training, the Catalan public universities educate thousands of citizens and professionals every year. Most of these people are young, but other age groups are also represented, all of which enrich society with their capacities for criticism, analysis, or their knowledge of a particular scientific or professional field. The objective of this Report is to present the work of training and teaching by Catalan public universities, demonstrate their accountability to society, and highlight their importance and quality. This Report follows the Indicator Reports of research and innovation in Catalan public universities that have been published annually by the Association of Catalan Public Universities since 2012.

The Report is divided into three interconnected chapters and a monograph. The first chapter presents a map of the range of training programmes on offer, the student profile, and the human and economic resources of the Catalan public university system. The second chapter considers the training process, dealing with questions such as the quality of the education provision, international mobility, performance, and internships. Then, the third chapter lays out the different possible itineraries and the options for continuing education offered by public universities. The document concludes with a monograph, the theme of which changes annually. In this edition, it covers the employability of university graduates and their integration into the labour market.

We have used a broad range of information sources and documentation to prepare this Report. Among them, the Catalan university system database (UNEIX), the reports and indicators from the AQU (Agency for Quality in the Catalan University System) and from each of the universities should be highlighted. Also, some indicators have been created especially for this report and for subsequent editions.

Eight Catalan public universities have collaborated on the creation of this document: the University of Barcelona (UB), the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), the Polytechnic University of Barcelona (UPC), Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), University of Girona (UdG), University of Lleida (UdL), Rovira i Virgili University (URV) and the Open University of Catalonia (UOC). The Executive Secretary of ACUP is responsible for the initial design and the overall coordination.
